Magazine and Book Design

MAGAZINES

While on a contract job with Trinity Consultants, I was assigned the 15th Issue of their magazine to complete the project with another designer. I did not create the cover design, but I was responsible for the article layouts and formatting as well as most graphics needed for the articles.

Here are a few of the graphics I created. To view the magazine, please click on the cover.

DTS Magazine is an award-winning quarterly magazine produced for donors, alums, students, and the general public. Each issue highlighted DTS news, several articles, and a section on alum updates and news. As time allowed between my other projects, the editor would ask for my help. I designed covers, created artwork, and produced entire issues working closely with the editor for deadlines and direction.

This article was a special request from the editor. She wanted me to design it within the style guidelines of the magazine but with unique artwork to capture the interest and essence of the article. I utilized an avatar creator program and some stock illustration elements to create the perfect gaming atmosphere.

I also created this unique image to be used for the online posting of the article on the voice.dts.edu magazine page.

I enjoyed working closely with the editor to produce this entire issue. We wanted to focus on the history and legacy of the seminary, and its graduates and professors.

DTS Magazine issues are submitted annually to the Evangelical Press Association for review with other materials produced by Christian organizations. Below are the award winners I designed from April 2021.
The 2021 Higher Goals Awards honor the best work done in EPA publications during the 2020 calendar year:

At Integrity Publishing, Corp., my primary responsibility included managing, redesigning, and art directing up to 3 designers to ensure the semi-annual Design Resources interior decorating magazine remained consistent and on time. I reorganized the process, saved the company money by ending the need for field designers, and improved review and approval processes to ensure fewer errors on press.

While working at Integrity Publishing Corp., the owners introduced and offered a new book to companies to celebrate their anniversaries. This hardcover book included a faux leather cover with debossed gold foil stamping, and each had a unique design. Clients provided all the photography and historical text.

CATALOGS

For 18 years at Dallas Theological Seminary, I worked closely with the academic dean and an editor to produce the annual catalog used by students, faculty, and staff.

Each academic year the catalog text and its design were updated. I managed the project and improved the process starting in 2004 for each printed (two-color design) and online version (full-color design). In 2019 the Seminary decided not to publish the catalog in print and only provide an online version for download and digital viewing. I added interactive features to the digital file and made it ADA Acrobat reader compatible.

BOOKS

At Dallas Theological Seminary, I also created a variety of books for different needs and audiences. These included campaign books, travel books for tour events, conference booklets, and departmental and student handbooks.

Working with the vice president of Advancement on specialized books to encourage high-dollar donations I created materials that helped them reach their goals. The materials have focused on building improvement or additions, scholarship funding, or other specific needs for the campus.

The Dallas Seminary Foundation, a division of DTS, provides financial planning and advice to donors of the Seminary. I designed a booklet describing these services to be given to potential donors, explaining the function and benefit of the Foundation while encouraging more donations to the Seminary.

Tours have long been a source of donations and a way for students and others to enjoy learning from DTS professors in unique locations. Each event is special and limited in the number of participants.

I created tour books for participants to take notes, record memories, and access historical and biblical information that enhanced the tour. Annual tours rotate locations, including Europe for the Reformation tour, a Danube River tour, a sailing, “Journeys of Paul” tour, and tours of Israel.

Handbooks were also an annnual need for students at the Seminary. I would create new designs and update text provided by editors to keep all handbooks current and useful to students.

A student handbook is updated annually to provide students with details and instructions needed for success.
Doctoral Programs provide a handbook to describe unique deadlines and requirements for their programs.

Play Programs

In the Spring of 2022 I began freelancing for the Lewisville High School Theatre department. I have had the opportunity to create programs for each performance and continue to work with them for upcoming shows.

The 24 Hour Play program was created at the event during 5 hours of the rehearsal time for this unique event.
